Poor Talynn never really got a finished nursery to live in and heck only lived in it for 7 months or so before she started bunking in with Kal. As soon as we finished Kalvin and Talynn’s new room I was finally able to finish the nursery I had wanted to do when we first moved in a year before! Shortly after we moved in I had painted all the walls yellow, and the trim and doors dark brown to match the dark wood nursery furniture. But painting the walls yellow was just step 1 in the process. So i had a lot of work ahead of me!
I wanted the biggest wall (only one without door, closet or window) to be my accent wall. I wanted to do a cool and colorful design that would bring in all my room colors together in one place First things first I painted the ceiling grey.
The accent wall I taped it off all around the sides, top, bottom, and then split the wall into thirds, and then each third i split in half…
I then made a little jig out of some cardboard so that i made sure all the lines i taped were at the same angle, and just taped each row at random distances. Some were really far apart some close, some evenly distributed. This gave alot of variety and really made this design work.
Next task was to tackle the walls (except the accent wall of course) I wanted them to look old, rough, faded. So I took a tub of vaseline and smeared it randomly on different spots of the wall, like you might do when distressing furniture. I then took the dark Teal color I wanted for the walls and painted them. After that dried I came back with a towel and wiped down the walls. The areas that had vaseline helped the teal paint wiped right off. It worked well but i almost wished i had been a bit more liberal with my vaseline, but i’m still happy with it.
I was now ready to paint the accent wall. The first 1/3 I painted a light green, the middle 1/3 the same dark teal as the rest of the walls, and the last 1/3 I painted orange….
Before the paint can dry you want to pull the tape off so that you don’t end up peeling paint off with it. It turned out even better than I could of hoped!
Now I just had some other side projects to do to really finish the room off nicely.
I recovered my rocking chair and ottoman (you can see part of it in the picture of above). It was an oatmeal color. I used some light green fleece with white polka dots. It was something I had left over from another project.
I also made the birdcage mobile for over the crib…..
I just made the birds out of cardboard, and covered them with fabric (all in different prints with my color scheme) and then hot glued them and some twigs to this small bird cage that i got really cheap. (can’t remember where) And the chain we got from Home Depot.
I did the painting over the crib as well (not my finest work, but ah well) it’s a symbolic piece called “day dream”.
I also sewed the crib skirt from fabric remnant from past projects….
And I sewed the little accent pillow with a bird to tie in with the mobile….
Curtain is just a sheer white polka dot curtain on a stainless steel rod, both of which we bought at Walmart.
It casts some pretty cool light through this window at dusk!
I love how vibrant this room is!
I noticed afterwards that our baby swing matches the nursery color scheme. My subconscious is a little OCD i think….
With each project I cross off the list this house begins to feel more and more like HOME!
